Dr Richard Curry
Director, Operations at Materials Processing Institute
Dr Richard Curry is the Director, Operations for the Materials Processing Institute. The Institute carries out industrial research and innovation in advanced materials, low carbon energy and the circular economy and has been supporting the materials, processing and energy sectors for over 70 years. Richard was part of the team driving the divestment of the Institute from its then parent company, Tata Steel, returning the organisation to independent ownership in 2014.
Richard’s background is in harsh environment sensors, novel analogue integrated circuit design for biological integration and holographic photo-lithography. Following a brief, but successful period in academia, Richard joined the Processes division of Tata Steel’s Research and Development function, in which he was part of an internationally recognised team, focussing on process improvements within steelmaking and continuous casting. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the Institute of Directors.
Richard has a strong interest in the application of smart technology to industrial processes and the identification of disruptive technologies within mature and declining phase industries.
